What is Search Engine Optimization (SEO)?
SEO is short term for search engine optimization, the process of expanding the number of visitors to a website by improving search ranking on a search engine. The higher your website ranks the greater the chance that users will visit the site.

The net results of properly performed search engine optimization are high search visibility on Google search; and receiving a growing number of e-mails and phone calls from your website promotional activities.

Algorithm (algo)

A program used by search engines to select the pages of a website to display for a given search query.

Alt Text

A text description of a picture of graphic. It usually isn’t displayed to the end user, unless the graphic is undeliverable, or a browser is used that doesn’t display graphics.


A software program which gathers and analyzes data about website’s usage. Google analytics is a feature rich, popular, free analytics program but there are others.


A specialized website used to present useful content in a more or less chronological series. Text, pictures or media may or may not be time sensitive.

Bot (robot, spider, crawler)

A computer program that autonomously searches websites. Search engines use bots to find and add web pages to their search indexes.

Bounce Rate

A percentage of website users who find a site and quickly leave it without viewing any other pages.


Verb – to add a web page from a site to a search engine index.

Indexed Pages

The pages on a site which have been indexed.

ISP (Internet Service Provider)

Generally this is the firm or organization hosting the website.


The single word or phrase that a user enters into a search engine that the business uses as a hook to create visits.


Text content within the HEAD or top section of an HTML page which furnishes information about the page.

Natural Search Results

The search engine results which are not sponsored, or paid for in any way.

Organic Search Results

A search results is considered organic when the results is not sponsored or paid for in any way and are attained through ethical search engine optimization.

Pagerank (PR)

A numeric value assigned by the Google algorithm. It quantifies link popularity and trust among other (proprietary) factors. Often confused with Toolbar Pagerank.

PPC (Pay Per Click)

Pay Per Click or Adword marketing is a contextual advertisement scheme where advertisers pay add agencies (such as Google) whenever a user clicks on their ad.


Any of several methods used to change the address of a landing page such as when a site is moved to a new domain.


Search Engine Results Page

Site Map

A page or structured group of pages which link to every user accessible page on a website.


A series of requests from the same uniquely identified client. A visit contains one or more page views.


Uniform Resource Locator – AKA Web Address.
