Much confusion exists about Google My Business vs. Google Plus. Business information has transitioned to different platforms through the years. So, it’s a challenge to keep up. It’s important to know the difference because Google My Business is vital to your medical practice.
Google My Business Vs. Google Plus
The business listing platform, Google My Business, is a dashboard where you manage the information that appears in everything Google: Knowledge Graph (shown below), search results and maps.
- Claim ownership and verify this page via Google
- Maintain correct address, phone number and website
- Update/add photos, office hours, procedures, products
- Respond to Google reviews
- View insights on phone calls, search views, photos, etc.
The Knowledge Graph appears on the right side of the Google search results. If the content in the Knowledge Graph isn’t “owned and verified”, there’s a link for the owner to claim the page. Google pulls initial information from other sites to show in the Knowledge Graph. Almost every doctor (exception is a new practice) has a page. You must own your Google My Business page(s) so that you can keep contact information current.
What about Google Plus?
Google+ is social site that is similar to Facebook. It offers individual and business pages where a person or business can post links, photos and videos. For businesses, it offers a way to categorize your posts into groups called collections. Google Plus can be attached to your Google My Business page. Sharing pictures and content helps you appear higher in Google searches. But, you no longer must have Google+ attached to your Google My Business page.
You may hear that Google may discontinue the Google+ platform. The Internet giant started initiated this service as a competitor for Facebook. However, it’s never caught on like Facebook, so it could be discontinued at some point. There will always be a “Google My Business” dashboard where you maintain contact content. You simply have to stay current on the name and access.
